Police Shoot, Kill Suspected Gunman in Fatal Boyle Heights Shooting

jueves, 9 de abril de 2015

A suspected gunman in a fatal shooting in Boyle Heights was shot and killed by LAPD police officers Wednesday night, authorities said.

Around 10:30 p.m., officers in the area of Fourth and Soto streets heard gunshots and observed a man falling down in the middle of the road, according to Sgt. Barry Montgomery of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers followed the suspected shooter and, with the help of air support, located that person less than two blocks away on Mathews Street between Third and Fourth streets, Montgomery said.

They confronted the allegedly armed person and an “officer-involved shooting occurred,” according to the LAPD sergeant. It was not immediately known how many times the person was shot.

The suspected gunman and the male victim both died, Montgomery said. Their names have not yet been released.

It was unclear whether they knew each other or what their relationship was prior to the first shooting.

A weapon was recovered at the scene by police.

Hours after the shootings, investigators were combing through evidence overnight as they tried to piece together what transpired before the initial gunshots were fired.

The bodies remained at the scenes early Thursday as police awaited the arrival of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner.

As is protocol for all officer-involved shootings, LAPD’s Force Investigation Division was investigating the incident, Montgomery said. Representatives from the Office of Inspector General and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office were also aiding in the investigation.
