A pregnant Orange County woman unexpectedly gave birth on the side of the southbound 15 Freeway near Cleghorn this weekend with the help of firefighters, according to the San Bernardino Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the scene Friday night after receiving a 911 call regarding a woman in active labor and determined the baby’s arrival was imminent, a news release from the department stated.
Paramedics already faced a number of challenges — including freeway traffic and poor lighting — when they discovered during the delivery that the baby’s umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck.
Still, they were able to safely deliver the healthy baby girl in the back of the family’s SUV within several minutes of their arrival, according to the release.
They were immediately taken by ambulance to Dignity Health Community Hospital of San Bernardino.
A hospital official identified the new mother as 30-year-old Carmen Urias.
The newborn baby was named Averly Tovar, according to the hospital.
Urias, her husband Hector Tovar and baby Averly were all said to be doing well.
